APIStrat 2014: Chicago and Taking APIs Mainstream

One of the most important goals we set when putting together the first APIStrat conference in 2012 was to enable as many people as possible to share and benefit from practical API experiences. At the same time we try to tap into the trends we see in the API space – where are new challenges arising? Where is the growth? What new technologies are emerging?

So when it came to choosing a venue for this year’s APIStrat in the United States this year we couldn’t have chosen better than Chicago! Sponsors, speakers and attendees have richly rewarded this so far with a great program in prospect. And the theme for the event was obvious:

APIS Go Mainstream”

The speaker lineup includes a huge variety of companies and organizations of all different sizes from Ford, Walgreens, Sears, the City of Chicago itself and Divvy to startups like Keen.IO, SwiftIQ through to Electric Imp which make the chips present in large numbers of Internet of Things devices. All this is evidence of the huge surge of API technology products and services that affect our daily lives.

We chose two strong trends in the field. The first is the combination of data and APIs to make increasingly intelligent decisions with data and use it to inform operations on which there will be several talks throughout the program and a keynote panel on Friday morning. The second is the increasing need for developers to build robust applications based on APIs which will be covered by a full developer track, hack challenge and a keynote panel on Thursday evening.
