APIs have deeply change the way innovative tech companies are building products, by allowing them to focus on their core value-adding service. It’s a bit like in the Apple ad: “there’s an API for that”.
Interview with Stanislas Polu, co-founder and all things Tech at Teleportd. Before this first entrepreneurial experience at Teleportd, he worked as a software engineer at Apple, Oracle and Quarter FS. He holds an degree from Ecole Polytechnique and a MSc in Computer Science from Stanford University.
Tell us more about Teleportd
Teleportd was born out of the observation that despite the number of images that were being taken from mobile devices and shared on “public” social networks, it was hard to access the data in transversal ways. Seeing all the latest pictures from a given location was a challenge, so was looking at images across platforms on a given key word. We set out to build a unique, homogenous index of all photos that shared these characteristics – taken by a smartphone and shared on a public URL – and to make them searchable to those interested in leveraging them, professionals in particular.
What API(s) does Teleportd offer today?
We offer both a Search API and a Streaming API. In both cases users can get access to images by location, key words, time period, platform. etc… Using our product called Capsules, it is also possible to add tags to images and retrieve these sets via API.
When did Teleportd realized that it needed an API?
It was always our intention to make an API available. Our core service is our search engine, and the API is at the core of our infrasctructure: it also powers the more packaged products that we make available.
What recommendations and tips would you give to a company planning to launch an API?
Put yourself in your users’ shoes: use a framework for endpoints that they will be familiar with. You’re talking to developers, so just optimise for efficiency, not looks.
Have a discussion group ready and encourage users to sign up. Soon enough you’ll see some power users answering questions before you get a chance to. That’s what you’re looking for: a healthy ecosystem of developers helping you build a better product.
Why and how are you using 3scale API Management Platform today?
Key generation, rate limits management and usage statistics. Having easy access to these is important to offer professional service to our users without having to build everything ourselves and to stay close to the developer community.
What benefits have you seen/are you expecting from your API program?
Having an API has allowed us to interface well with agencies and web developers who needed to operate under strong time constraints, with minimum set up friction and with strong pricing visibility while maintaining full control of the final experience they were delivering. An API is ideal for these customers, more and more of which we’re looking forward to serving!
What is your vision for your API?
We want Teleportd to become a key partners to other professionals seeking to better leverage real-time crowd-sourced content. Our API is a core component of that service.
Teleportd is a real-time search engine focused on the millions of public mobile photos shared from smartphones all over the world on one of many social networks like Twitter, Instagram or Foursquare. Teleportd makes these photos searchable and streamable via API.
