Dockerized version of APIcast 2.0 deploys on OpenShift for easier installation and operation in microservice environments
Today we’re happy to announce the general availability of Red Hat 3scale APIcast gateway 2.0. The APIcast gateway (NGINX-based) is open source and has served hundreds of happy customers over the last four years. Now we’ve taken it to the next level, supporting both a cloud gateway or hybrid model with an on-prem gateway. In fact, the new on-premise version introduces significant upgrades in terms of performance and flexibility. 3scale was the first in market with on-prem and now we are pleased to offer the second generation.
The API gateway, which is configured within 3scale’s Admin Portal, is part of the 3scale API Management SaaS offering. The Admin Portal allows customers to define desired authentication methods, set rate limits, get analytics on the usage of their APIs, and create a developer portal for the…
We are happy to announce the 3scale nginx-based API Gateway is now available as a Docker image on the Red Hat OpenShift PaaS solution. Customers using OpenShift can easily deploy the 3scale API Gateway with a few clicks and leverage multiple additional benefits of this PaaS. Now, any application written on OpenShift can automatically scale up based on demand and can easily be moved to another environment that supports the same languages, preventing vendor dependency and freeing customers from lock-in.
OpenShift is an open source, enterprise-class platform-as-a-service (PaaS) with community and development leadership provided by Red Hat. OpenShift allows application developers to automate hosting, configuration, deployment, and administration for whole application stacks in an elastic cloud environment that scales based on demand. Since OpenShift supports Docker containers and Kubernetes orchestration, it also supports microservices efforts. This comb…
We’re very excited to announce our four-hour joint workshop with Amazon Web Services at the AWS Pop-up Loft London this Monday, April 25th from 9am to 1pm. Find more information and registration on the workshop website. The Loft is located in The Brew Eagle House (Google Maps – 163 City Rd, London EC1V 1NR, UK). Please check the prerequisites for this workshop.
Automation of IT infrastructure isn’t just a productivity enhancer, it’s a key requirement for businesses to remain agile and competitive. The open interfaces of the 3scale API Management Platform make it easy to script deployment for a variety of configuration management platforms, including Chef. Our customers asked for automated solutions to deploy the API gateway on-premise, and we delivered. We’re happy to introduce the 3scale Chef Cookbook.
The 3scale Chef Cookbook allows any Chef user to easily automate the deployment of the 3scale API gateway and connection with the 3scale cloud for easier internal deployments and quicker connection with other services. It’s an enterprise-ready solution for development operations, now available as an option on all free and paid 3scale plans.
We’re also proud to add the 3scale Cookbook to our family of open source projects. Contributors are welcome and encouraged to
Leverage the Benefits of Both Products
Amazon’s recent launch of the Amazon API Gateway is a clear indication that the idea of opening up access to digital assets through APIs – and using API management to gain visibility and control – is becoming more and more mainstream. As companies think about cloud strategies, they increasingly need to think about API strategies, too. The Amazon API Gateway and the 3scale API Management Platform are two very different but complementary products. We took a close look at the Amazon API Gateway and implemented an integration with the 3scale API Management product to give API providers the best of both worlds.
AWS Closed-Source, Proprietary Offer Reinforces Import of APIs to Today’s IT; 3scale Continues to Support AWS Users with Open Source Solution To Be Used Across All Platforms
Today our partner AWS announced its own API Gateway. We are pleased to see industry giants joining the pioneers in enabling an API driven web.
We offer an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) that allows the quick and easy use of Amazon web services for integration with 3scale. We open source an Nginx API gateway as our option for customers who don’t want to be locked into a proprietary, closed source option that limits use case flexibility.
With the 3scale AMI there is no need to maintain your own server infrastructure, and configuration can be easily replicated for testing, versioning and load balancing across multiple IT environments.
Overall, Amazon’s API Gateway announcement shows how important APIs and API Management have become. It’s great to see they …
These posts are based on Mark’s presentation at APIStrat/APIDays Berlin. The video is now available on YouTube.
Here is the second part of our how-to on running a load test on your API. In the first part, we walked through the process of setting up your load testing environment and deciding what are the right metrics to measure and the different approaches to measuring them. We also provided some guidance on what tools to use and finally obtained real data points about how our API was performing.
We will now look at ways of securely exposing your API to the public while making sure that its performance is not being affected.
How adding an access control layer affects your API
At this point we have a reasonably high performance API, but what would happen if someone started sending traffic at a rate beyond 16.000 req/second? How can you pr…
See How Easy It Is To Get Up And Running On Our Cloud-Hosted Proxy
We recently announced APIcast, a new cloud-hosted API gateway (or proxy) that makes it easy to launch APIs on 3scale’s API management platform. Below you’ll find a short but sweet APIcast product demo video of Alex Williams of The New Stack interviewing CEO Steve Willmott as he shows how to get started in less than six minutes.
The demo is available on The New Stack website and embedded below. If this looks like a good solution for your low- or moderate-volume APIs, or for staging and quick testing for your enterprise API, try APIcast for yourself!
No Code Or Hardware Deployment Required. Up to 50,000 Calls Per Day. What Are You Waiting For?
3scale’s primary mission is to make it easier and less expensive to launch and operate an API. As part of that effort we just launched APIcast, a cloud-hosted API gateway (or proxy) that makes it fast and simple to launch an API on 3scale’s API management platform in just a few clicks. No need to modify backend code, or deploy proxy software or hardware internally. It’s free and supports up to 50,000 API calls per day.
APIcast is a perfect solution for small to medium volume API owners who want to get a managed API running fast. No local code deployment means simple configuration and faster time to go-live with the very same rich API management feature set 3scale provides all our customers. Everything you need. Nothing y…
New 3scale Option: Configure OAuth2 Flows Directly from the Proxy Integration Wizard
We are pleased to announce that implementing OAuth2 flows in the 3scale API Gateway is now easier than ever with the new option to configure OAuth2 flows directly from the proxy integration wizard. This allows your 3scale API Gateway to act as an OAuth2 provider supporting the authorization code grant by making this configurable from the 3scale proxy integration wizard. We hope that these enhancements will make the adoption of OAuth2 for your API quicker and easier by letting the 3scale API Gateway take care of issuing and managing access tokens for your third party applications.
A lot of API providers are increasingly concerned with the security of the data they expose through their APIs, especially if that data belongs to the end users of your service. As an API provider, you want to allow your end users to take advantage of the widest possible application eco-system built on top of your API, but you also want to ensure that the data y…
