API Crash Course
As part of our collaboration with Startupbootcamp Berlin, the leading global startup accelerator with a focus on Smart Transportation & Energy, we ran an API Crash Course workshop. The slides are available on SlideShare and embedded at the bottom of this post. In the workshop we introduced the various business benefits of APIs, how these could be leveraged as an organization and gave some examples of successful case studies. In the second part of the workshop, we covered the various stages of the API lifecycle and introduced best practices and tools for each stage. We will publish details related to each of the four stages of the API lifecycle in a 4-part blog post. The remainder of this post is the first part of this series.
The API Lifecycle
We see the API lifecycle as made up of four stages, which an API provider would iterate through several times as part of a…
One of the unexpected trends at APIStrat was the selfie – we believe Ricky Robinett started the trend with his presentation, when he asked audience members to take a selfie as part of a demo for Twilio’s new MMS capability. But the trend didn’t stop there, and soon more attendees joined in the fun.
(That last photo is an “honorary mention” selfie from Kris Chant, who helped demonstrate a brain-controlled drone from Embarcadero Technologies.)
NEW Hackathon Format A Smashing Success
At this year’s API Strategy and Practice (APIStrat) conference in Chicago we tried a new hackathon format: API Speed Hack. We introduced the format in an earlier blog post. And here is our quick wrap-up:
Made Possible By Our Most Excellent Sponsors….
We had a total blast! We had 15 teams competing to tackle eight challenges in three hours. We had food, drinks, music, nerf guns and a lot of fun. All of which would not have been possible without our sponsors — so, here is a thanks to the APIStrat Speed Hack sponsors for their help, technical support and efforts in judging…
Last weeks fourth (are we already on 4?!) APIStrat conference kicked off on Wednesday with 6 great workshops, evening drink meetings and then rolled on from there. Over the full two and half days of the conference there were amazing talks, discussions, and a large number of Chicago Pretzels consumed! We can’t say thank you enough to everybody involved – speakers, sponsors and attendees – they really do make the event!
We had everything from projects to light up the planet with 65 million new APIs to flying a drone using brainpower and plugging APIs into cars and the corner store, and everything in between.
We hope it was valuable for you too and we’ll be following up with posts and videos of the content! Some of the slides, videos and photos, can already be found here:
This morning started off with fantastic talks by John Ellis (Global Technologist and Head of Development at Ford) and Tim McCauley (Senior Director of Consumer Mobile) of Walgreens. Fascinating and useful perspective on development with APIs for product and consumer services. These two speakers had great insights on how far things have come and where they need to go next.
Kyle Wild of Keen IO and Alex Williams had a fairly philosophical and 3scal…
Workshops Kicked Off Today With Standing Room Only & Sold Out Status
This is the fourth edition of the API Strategy & Practice Conference, also known as APIStrat. It is my second. Overall, I’ve attended more conferences and events than I can count, and I can honestly say this event is kind of amazing.
APIs drive pretty much everything – web, mobile, business – whether the majority of people know it or not. So conferences like this – of which there are a growing number these days – are really exciting. The API wave hasn’t yet crested – but it’s already got momentum and being a part of the discussion as APIs go mainstream is incredibly interesting. And the community of API experts, strategists and vendors who participate are devoted to the potential of APIs to transform tech and business and life. It’s not a product fest with vendor pitches at the fore – it’s all…
Come See Us in Chicago – September 24-26

If you’ll be at the conference, stop by and say hello! You can visit us at our booth, schedule a meeting, or come see our presentations. We have something for just about everyone who’s interested in APIs.
