Route 66 in the US, Abbey Road in London, Champs-Élysées in Paris – these roads have inspired many songs, movies, and stories. It’s time to make some new routes famous, among them: the path from San Francisco to Nashville.
In early June, hundreds of hackers and entrepreneurs (“buspreneurs”) from 7 major cities in the US and in Mexico will take to the open road for the best 3-day trip of their lives. But there will be no time for sightseeing. They will be hacking day and night. They will have only 3 days to invent a brand new startup and go through their entrepreneur journey.
On the road, they will struggle with the same questions that entrepreneurs face everyday: What is the problem they are trying to solve? How are they solving it? Who will buy it? How should they promote their product? Is it time to pivot?
And unlike a normal hacking competition, the deadline to finish your project is real – it’s physical – because once the bus arrives in Nashville, it’s over. Then…
It’s not a surprise anymore – we love hackathons at 3scale. We are always excited to see hackers create incredible projects in a short amount of time. So imagine how excited we were when the team from Hack4Europe asked us to take part in the biggest online European hackathon ever organized. We were thrilled! :)
Part of the 3scale team is based in Barcelona, and many of our customers are in Europe too, so we are really happy to help spread hackathon culture on this side of the Atlantic.
What is Hack4Europe 2015?
Following last year’s success, the organizing team of Hack4France decided to create a global European competition, involving European startups and hackers.
Hackers will have three months between now and the 17th of May to build projects. Those projects will be divided into innovative categories from Internet of T…
While some of you may have spent last weekend enjoying some slopes, hackers around the world were hard at work for Koding’s Global Virtual Hackathon. We got so excited about its ambitious new format that we decided to offer a special 3scale prize for the best use of one of our customers’ APIs.
First Hackathon of Its Kind
This was the first ever global virtual hackathon! The organizer, Koding, is an online IDE for developers. As they help people work together online and remotely, they were a natural fit for organizing a remote hackathon at this unprecedented scale. Over the course of couple of weeks, they received thousands of applications for this special event, and in the end 2000 teams around the world were invited to compete for more than $35,000 of prizes.
At 3scale, we love to support the hackathon community and its innovatio…
Meeting FirstBuild at AT&T Car and Home Hackathon
Back in September, I attended AT&T Car and Home Hackathon in Las Vegas with 3scale to present our APIs. It was a great event with a lot of hardware hacks. During the judging round, I saw some interesting demos by hackers who had hacked a washing machine. They were able to launch the cycle using a smart watch, and it sent a notification when the laundry was ready. It was a really impressive demo that peaked my curiosity.
In the end of our judging round, I went back to the booth were th…
NEW Hackathon Format A Smashing Success
At this year’s API Strategy and Practice (APIStrat) conference in Chicago we tried a new hackathon format: API Speed Hack. We introduced the format in an earlier blog post. And here is our quick wrap-up:
Made Possible By Our Most Excellent Sponsors….
We had a total blast! We had 15 teams competing to tackle eight challenges in three hours. We had food, drinks, music, nerf guns and a lot of fun. All of which would not have been possible without our sponsors — so, here is a thanks to the APIStrat Speed Hack sponsors for their help, technical support and efforts in judging…

This year at the API Strategy & Practice Conference (APIStrat) in Chicago (Sept. 24–26) we are trying something new – the API Speed Hack.
What is it?
Think of the Speed Hack as a “performance enhanced” hackathon. We think it’s a very effective, practical and fun way to promote APIs to developers.
Today we announced some exciting developments for the upcoming API Strategy & Practice Conference in Chicago. And we mean development – we’ve added a new Developer Track, Expo Zone and Speed Hack Challenge, co-organized with API Evangelist and our friends at WIP.
Because we’ve seen the number of app developer attendees at APIStrat grow ever time, we decided to create a program that still takes the pulse of where APIs are headed, but also provides a way to for developers to meet key API providers and get more involved.
The new Developer Track includes talks from API providers including Twilio, Traitify, Context.io, Twitter, and Respoke. There is an Expo Zone where developers can meet and talk with all of those API providers. And finally, to test out their new API knowledge, have a bit of fun and explore some of the leading APIs a…
