Dockerized version of APIcast 2.0 deploys on OpenShift for easier installation and operation in microservice environments
Today we’re happy to announce the general availability of Red Hat 3scale APIcast gateway 2.0. The APIcast gateway (NGINX-based) is open source and has served hundreds of happy customers over the last four years. Now we’ve taken it to the next level, supporting both a cloud gateway or hybrid model with an on-prem gateway. In fact, the new on-premise version introduces significant upgrades in terms of performance and flexibility. 3scale was the first in market with on-prem and now we are pleased to offer the second generation.
The API gateway, which is configured within 3scale’s Admin Portal, is part of the 3scale API Management SaaS offering. The Admin Portal allows customers to define desired authentication methods, set rate limits, get analytics on the usage of their APIs, and create a developer portal for the…
The Open API Initiative is still a very new organization, and it’s great to get the opportunity to talk to new audiences about it. Thanks to the OW2 consortium’s kind invitation, we got the chance to do that in two sessions at Cloud Expo Europe this week.
The first was a presentation on the Open API Initiative itself and a first taste of what is being worked on for the new version of the specification. The second was an excellent panel on the role of open source and open standards in cloud with Alan Sill (President, Open Grid Forum President), Cedric Thomas (CEO, OW2), and Marc Dutoo (OCCIware Project Leader). The panel covered some great topics including the role of open source vs. the role of open standards, and what organizations should think about when considering standards adoption.
The discussion reinforced how important the combination of open source and open standards has been in enabling innovat…
At 3scale we’ve always been fairly opinionated about the right way to architect API Management, and since founding have had a hybrid architecture at our core. So with Apigee today announcing an architecture with some similarities we figured it would be a good time to talk about those choices and why they matter.
API management in essence is about control and visibility of API traffic. In other words, it is knowing what is flowing through API pipes and making sure it is:
- A) the traffic you want
- B) doing the right thing
This involves all sorts of issues from security and identity to performance, uptime and fulfillment of business goals.
When architecting 3scale, we saw the same concern over and over again: API traffic should be deliverable from many locations, over different technology stacks and with different delivery needs but it needs a consistent, uniform ma…
AWS Closed-Source, Proprietary Offer Reinforces Import of APIs to Today’s IT; 3scale Continues to Support AWS Users with Open Source Solution To Be Used Across All Platforms
Today our partner AWS announced its own API Gateway. We are pleased to see industry giants joining the pioneers in enabling an API driven web.
We offer an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) that allows the quick and easy use of Amazon web services for integration with 3scale. We open source an Nginx API gateway as our option for customers who don’t want to be locked into a proprietary, closed source option that limits use case flexibility.
With the 3scale AMI there is no need to maintain your own server infrastructure, and configuration can be easily replicated for testing, versioning and load balancing across multiple IT environments.
Overall, Amazon’s API Gateway announcement shows how important APIs and API Management have become. It’s great to see they …
We are excited to announce that we have open-sourced our UN Data API.
We built this API for a few reasons. First, to make the data more easily accessible – the UN has a lot of interesting and useful data and we thought developers should be able to access it (read on for more detail on what’s included in the data). It was also an opportunity to provide an example implementation of a RESTful API for those interested in learning more. We hope putting the…
